金がなくなったので友人に来てもらう
↓
友人は来てくれたけどその金で一緒に遊んでまた金をなくす
↓
今度は友人を人質にして「すぐ戻る」といって東京に金を借りに戻る
↓
けど、金を貸してくれと切り出せず、ずっと友人を待たせてしまう
↓
その後、何とか帰ってきた友人が太宰を問い詰めると
太宰は「待つ方がつらいか、それとも待たせる方がつらいか」と言ったという話(詳しくは熱海事件でググれ)

走れメロスもよく読んでみればいいわけがましい言葉のオンパレードだったりする。
